Our Postman Bag - Xhosa made from 100% South African Cow Leather with a multi colour tribal design woven fabric insert on the front. The Tan Leather we use is buffed, coated in oil and then burned through an ironing press to achieve the effect. Once in use, the oil disperses into the hide, softening the leather from inside out.

The interior of this Postman Bag - Xhosa also lined with an original South African Shweshwe fabric for strength and style. Sporting a live edge fold over flap, antique brass fittings and adjustable shoulder strap. As well as a zipped pocket on the back. Hence the Postman Bag is great for travelling, being the perfect size for all essential items. All NAVA Apparel bags are handmade by local South African craftswomen.

Artist Inspiration: The Xhosa people a Bantu ethnic tribe of Southern Africa living in south-east South Africa. The name “Xhosa” comes from a legendary leader called uXhosa. There's also a theory that, prior to that, the name Xhosa came from a word meaning “fierce” or “angry” in some San language. The Xhosa Collection inspired by the strength and determination of Nelson Mandela who fought for the freedom of his people.

Shweshwe a printed cotton fabric widely used for traditional South African clothing. Manufactured in a variety of colours and designs characterised by intricate geometric patterns. Shweshwe described as the denim of South Africa. Traditionally used to make dresses, aprons, skirts and wraparound clothing, as well as accessories. Shweshwe clothing traditionally worn by newly married Xhosa and Sotho women, known as makoti. Xhosa women also incorporated the fabric into their traditional ochre-coloured blanket clothing. Aside from traditional wear, shweshwe used in contemporary South African fashion design for women and men from all ethnic groups.
