Cherry wood, a type of hardwood that comes from the cherry tree. Two main types of cherry trees used for woodworking: the black cherry tree and the wild cherry tree. Both trees produce high-quality lumber but the black cherry tree more commonly used due to its larger size and greater availability. Cherry wood has a medium density, with a fairly fine, even texture. Good wood bending properties, medium strength and shock resistance. Low stiffness but can also be steam bent with care. Generally straight grained except in the area of large knots and near the butt. Flat-sawn material shows a well-marked growth-ring figure. The heartwood in the centre of the tree is light-pinkish or yellowish-brown. Darkening in time to a mahogany shade as you would see in older furniture. But when golden-brown in colour, it can sometimes have a slightly greenish cast.
